Legally BASE Jump in the United States

By far, the fastest and most thrilling way to take in the scenery of a place is to hurtle yourself off it from a very high location.

With a parachute, obviously.

The problem is that BASE jumping is considered one of the most dangerous extreme sports in the world. Because of this, many states and countries have completely banned the practice. While it is high-risk, for those looking for a thrill, BASE jumping can also be extremely rewarding.

Think about it, what else can compare to the adrenaline rush of plummeting towards the ground from hundreds of feet above?

If you’re interested in taking the plunge in America, here are two legal destinations to BASE jump in the United States:

Perrine Bridge – Twin Falls, Idaho

The Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho is the eighth highest bridge in the United States and a popular BASE jumping destination for thrill-seekers. It is also unique in the fact that it does not require a permit to jump (although it’s highly recommended). The Perrine Bridge is currently the only legal destination in the United States for year-round BASE jumping.

New River Gorge Bridge – Fayetteville, West Virginia

Every year on the third Saturday of October, BASE jumpers are legally given 24 hours to leap from the River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia. The bridge, standing at 876 feet high, is an iconic symbol of the state. Its dedication has been officially celebrated since 1980 with the first official Bridge Day.

Hundreds of individuals come each year to BASE jump the bridge. For $75.00, you can register at https://officialbridgeday.com to be a BASE jumper in October 2022.

 Tips for Safe Jumping

Although the danger of BASE jumping can never fully be eliminated, having the proper knowledge of BASE jumping gear and the experience to navigate the uncertainty of a jump can significantly lower the risk factors. Consider speaking to a professional who is familiar with the area.

Before visiting a new BASE jumping location, ensure that you’re fully prepared for the conditions of the area. Consider speaking to professionals who have made the jump before you. If you’re not confident in your jumping abilities or don’t have any experience, you could try Tandem BASE jumping!

Additionally, check the jumping legality of the location where you plan to visit. There are hefty fines (and worse consequences) for making illegal jumps!

Wherever you choose to BASE jump, the best thing you can do is use common sense.

Happy thrill-seeking!
